Palm WebOS SDK now open to everyone
After several months from the release of the Palm Pre, Palm has finally opened the WebOS SDK to everyone. WebOS is the operating system that drives Palm’s new Palm Pre device. The Palm developer site is now accepting registrations to the developer program that is currently under beta. Registration is required and free. Upon approval you will gain access to download the SDK and documentation and start developing for the Palm Pre. You will also gain access to the Palm developer forum once membership is approved.

The webOSdev, Palm’s site for the Palm Pre developer community, provides the following tools and documentation to create Palm Pre software applications.
- The Palm® Mojo™ Software Development Kit and tools
- SDK documentation
- webOSdev discussion forums
- webOS blog
The currently available Mojo SDK, aka WebOS SDK, is version 1.1 which is the first public release of the SDK. As you might have already known, software applications on the Palm Pre are created by using existing standards that are familiar to web developers worldwide. The Mojo SDK provides an application framework based HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. With the Mojo SDK you will be able to:
- Build applications with gesture-based navigation, transitions, and scrolling
- Use the webOS notification system to alert users without interrupting them
- Leverage the local storage capabilities of HTML so that data is available even when users are offline
- Use a JSON-based message bus to tap into a wide range of device services, including contacts, calendars, and location
The SDK also includes the Palm emulator, command-line development tools, and optional plug-ins for the Eclipse development environment (phonelover’s note: Wonder how long it will take for someone to create a version for the NetBeans environment
). There are also sample codes included in the SDK. Download the Mojo SDK .
